Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
Directed by Guy Ritchie, this interpretation of the legendary struggle between Sherlock Holmes and his intellectually matched enemy James Moriarty is in one word clever. The movie is successful as an action film, but its greatest strength comes from the brilliance of the plot on which the action is predicated. The interplay between the minds of Holmes and Moriarty throughout the film sets up a twisted story line where attention to detail is critical - the seemingly subtle elements are where the genius is found. Holmes' ability to perceive a situation through components which others would overlook as insignificant, details of color or clothing or disposition, give him the upper hand in countless situations which lead him towards his enemy. Up until the climax, Holmes and Watson make advance after advance only to find that Moriarty is already one step ahead, creating a captivating and suspenseful experience for the audience. Overall, this movie has quality both above and beneath the surface and can be enjoyed as both an action film or at a more intellectual level.
