In “Stormy Coast Scene after a Shipwreck” artist Horace Vernet depicts a scene of an injured woman being pulled out of the sea from a dark and frightening sea. The tone is very ominous and foreboding, particularly in the fine details of the piece such as the colors and the style of the painting. There are a lot of greens and greys, giving off the impression of a bleak situation for the subjects of the painting, the victims of the title-mentioned shipwreck. Also there are many wavy lines to illuminate the crashing waves and the jagged rocks, adding a sense of danger to the piece. With both elements added into the single painting, emotion and pathos are thrust onto the audience to empathize with the poor group in the artwork.
