In Der Heuwagen, John Constable focuses on depicting a hyper-realistic landscape that almost looks as if you would see it if you were to look out the window of an old countryside farmhouse. Constable paints us a scene that, though beautiful, invokes and eerie sense of dread as if something bad in the future is on the brink of happening. The sky is overwhelming and massive and occupies much of the space on the canvas almost belittling the onlooker, signifying Mother Nature’s supremacy over man and beast.
